In 2024, I revisited Ecuador with the whole family to see it with new eyes.
Cascada de Pegucha
Within the province of Otavalo, we found this charming park that offered a beautiful nature hike. We even spotted a century-old tree along the way and ancient Incan ruins. Crossing the bridge and climbing a few stairs, the trail led us to a stunning waterfall. Nothing quite beats the sound of a mighty rush of water falling over unmoving rocks.
Papallacta Hot Springs
I experienced my first hot springs here outside of Quito. Let me tell you, hot is an understatement. I knew it would be, but I was not immediately ready for the thermal springs’ intensity. But it only took a few minutes for my body to acclimate and relax in the heated waters.
Once it felt like we boiled alive, our family friend recommended we take the polar plunge in the cold pool. One by one, my brother, dad, sister-in-law, and I jumped into the freezing water. I felt a rush run through me as if ice had pierced my veins. But soon, it turned into pricks like pins and needles. I definitely recommend this invigorating experience.
Fishing Experience in the Mountains
The wonderful part of visiting a country with a local family is being introduced to all the hidden treasures that aren’t on any tourist map. The downside is never getting clear details, like what city or village you’re in or the destination name. I guess that’s how they stay secret spots.
After a long and winding drive through lush mountains, our host family brought us to a fishing farm in a small village. Here, we caught our own fish using simple rods and lines. I’ve never been fishing before, and this experience taught me I would need a lot of practice. I think I managed to catch one fish the entire time.
But I still had a great time. We brought our buckets over to the restaurant that is part of the farm for the owners to prepare right on the spot. Frankly, I’m not a fan of fish, so I abstained from eating the meal. But my parents and friends wholeheartedly enjoyed the humble fare, prepared by a local cook after they’d caught it themselves.
There’s still so much more of Ecuador to explore, and I cannot wait until I return for the next adventure.
