When I travel to new places, I like to engage in literary tourism. Visiting bookstores around the world offers a glimpse into the local culture. It showcases what the community values, and often, these shops and libraries hold great history. Below are just a few of the wonderfully bookish places I’ve been to (and one I have on my wish list).
Dunaway Books – St. Louis, MO
In general, St. Louis charmed me, so I would definitely like to revisit the city sometime. But Dunaway Books had the quintessential vibes of a used bookstore. Specializing in rare and out-of-print books, the smell of used books wafted through the air. They were established in 1965, so Dunaway has long been a literary touchstone in the community.
Quimby’s – Chicago, IL
Filled with self-published zines, chapbooks, and books by local authors, Quimby’s embodies the ultimate literary spirit. They are self-proclaimed “Specialists in the importation, distribution, and sale of unusual publications, aberrant periodicals, saucy comic booklets, and assorted fancies.” In other words, they’re wholly dedicated to the art of storytelling.
Steamy Lit – Florida
I’d be remiss not to shout out my own local bookstore, Steamy Lit, a shop dedicated solely to romance novels. What started as a subscription box service now serves communities in two locations: Fort Lauderdale and Tampa. I love being part of the book clubs, joining events, and generally being around other romance lovers. Even if you’re not big into romance, the stores are cute AF and filled with bookish goodies.
New York Public Library – Manhattan, NY
The building itself is beautiful, but of course, it bustles with the life that New York City is renowned for. Founded in 1895, the walls of the various locations of the NYPL are filled with literary history. The famed Rose Main Reading Room contains ornate architecture that feels like the world of old.
Library of Congress – Washington, D.C.
I got the chance to visit this one on Capitol Hill during my first trip to Washington. It’s brimming with exhibitions showcasing countless artworks and history. To make the most of your visit, make sure to grab a free timed-entry ticket 30 days before.
The Book Loft – Columbus, OH
During my adventures at the Mothman Festival, a friend and I finished our journey in Columbus. Stumbling upon The Book Loft of German Village felt like finding heaven. A labyrinth of shelves where every twist and turn brought you to another corner of books. It seemed to go on forever. It actually took us almost an hour to weave our way through the whole store.
The Strand – Manhattan, NY
Maybe it’s cliché, but if you take a trip to New York, you have to visit The Strand. This is a literary staple for book nerds everywhere. With four floors of books that cover everything from philosophy to fantasy, it’s a shop every bookworm should see at least once in their lives.
The New Romantics – Orlando, FL
A bookstore dedicated to creating a safe space for romance lovers named after a Taylor Swift song? Of course, this is on my wish list. I’m very much looking forward to visiting it the next time I’m in Orlando.
